Ali Aydan: Accountability Is the Culture Shift That Moves Results

Early in my career, I noticed something that kept repeating. Where accountability was missing, teams fell into the same traps: missed deadlines, low morale and no real ownership.

The truth is, accountability doesn’t happen on its own. It needs to be built. And when it is, everything changes.

Here’s what I focus on to make it stick:

1. Start with clarity

If people aren’t sure what success looks like, how can they own it? I make expectations visible and measurable. Everyone knows their role, what they’re responsible for and how it fits into the bigger picture.

2. Walk the talk

If I miss something, I own it openly. It’s not just about setting the tone. It’s about showing that accountability applies at every level, including mine.

3. Make feedback part of the rhythm

Accountability grows in environments where feedback is normal and constructive. It’s not about catching people out; it’s about helping them grow and encouraging regular reflection.

4. Give ownership, not just tasks

People are far more likely to take responsibility when they have decision-making space. I encourage my team to take control within their areas. It builds confidence and drives results.

5. Spotlight those who step up

When someone owns a challenge, especially when it’s tough, I call it out. Recognising accountability in action makes it something the whole team values.

One final thought
Accountability should never feel like control. When there’s trust, clarity and room to lead, accountability becomes something people choose, not something they’re forced into.
