Everyone wants to hear the truth …
until they hear it.
We say we value honesty.
But when the truth is uncomfortable, we resist it.
As a leader, I’ve learned that truth-telling is easy in theory but hard in practice.
Here’s what happens when real honesty enters the room:
1️⃣ People get defensive – The natural reaction to hard truths is often denial.
2️⃣ Egos get bruised – Especially when feedback challenges long-held beliefs.
3️⃣ Short-term discomfort rises – But long-term growth depends on it.
4️⃣ Relationships can be tested – The best ones survive honesty; the weak ones don’t.
5️⃣ Progress speeds up – Because truth eliminates confusion and wishful thinking.
The best teams and leaders embrace the truth, even when it’s tough to hear. Because avoiding it only delays the inevitable.
So, next time you ask for honesty, be ready for it.
