Ali Aydan: Rethinking Success: Aligning Goals with What Really Matters

Success is often mistaken for titles, income or recognition. It took me years to realise that none of it counts if it doesn’t contribute to your happiness.

We push hard to grow businesses, build careers and tick off achievements. But how often do we stop to ask ourselves, “Does this actually make me happier?”

Here are three shifts that helped me bring success and happiness into better alignment:

1. Decide What Success Means to You
It’s easy to get caught up chasing someone else’s idea of success. But the most grounded people I’ve met define it on their own terms. They’re not trying to impress; they’re building something meaningful to them.

2. Don’t Just Chase, Create
Endless pursuit of external approval leaves a gap. Instead, I started creating things that bring me joy, work I care about, deeper relationships, and habits that support my wellbeing. That’s when real fulfilment followed.

3. Count Moments, Not Just Milestones
Metrics fade. Memories last. I’ve learned to ask, “Am I building a life I’ll look back on with pride?” If the answer is shaky, it’s time to reassess.

Here’s what it comes down to: happiness isn’t something you arrive at. It’s something you build with intention, every day. Even if that means walking away from things that once looked impressive on paper.

Success should support your life, not take it over.
